Where the Heck is My Uterus? And Why it Matters.

Optimally, the uterus leans slightly over the bladder in the center of the pelvis, about one and a half inches above the pubic bone. It is supported in this position by muscles, the vaginal wall and ligaments that attach it to the back, front, and sides of the pelvis. Uterine ligaments are made to stretch to accommodate a growing fetus inside and to move freely when the bladder or bowel is full. Ideally, we want the uterus to have the ability to move, and stay buoyant, with the ability to re-center itself. Sometimes ligaments and muscles can weaken and/or loosen, or muscles may become tense and tight, causing the uterus to move downward, forward, backward or to either side, without the ability to move back into a balanced position. Fascial constrictions or scar tissue may also be present, pulling the uterus in a certain direction or restricting its natural movement.

A uterus in a position other than centered is often referred to as being “tilted or prolapsed" and this positioning, if it is consistent, can result in unwanted symptoms such as painful or irregular or painful menstrual cycles and ovulation, PMS, bladder and yeast infections, constipation, and fertility challenges. People are often told, "you have a tilted or tipped uterus, there is nothing that can be done, or it's normal don't worry about it ". Depending on the symptoms a person experiences, treatment offered may include the hormonal birth control, muscle relaxants, or surgery.

Many people have physical and emotional symptoms from uterus that is out of balance that can be addressed and prevented with simple, noninvasive massage and bodywork techniques. When reproductive organs shift, they can constrict normal flow of blood and lymph, and disrupt nerve connections. Additional pressure sitting on blood and lymph vessels can cause issues throughout the systems in the body. By supporting the ability of the uterus to shift back into place, homeostasis, or the natural balance of the body, is restored in the pelvic area and the surrounding organs. Nutrients that help to nourish tissue and balance hormones are allowed to circulate properly. The uterus can more efficiently do it’s job during menstruation, pregnancy and birth. This restoration is essential for healthy reproductive functioning such as painless menses, healthy and comfortable pregnancy, and efficient labor and birth.

We all deserve to have these wonderful things. If you think your uterus could use help finding more balance or if you are having unwanted menstrual or pregnancy symptoms- let’s get to good work.
